Administrating a database can besides performance tuning encompass several different tasks: Planning, installation, monitoring, deployment to production, patching, upgrade, migration, backup, availability, solving operational problems etc.

The roles that a DBA may need to fill spans from a planning/advisory role - "DBA architect" - over supporting a development project - "Development DBA" - to being responsible for daily database operations - "Operations DBA".
